Manages nutrition care for hospital patients, collaborating with care teams, conducting screenings, providing therapy and education, overseeing menu planning, inventory, and staff training.

Job Purpose

Evaluates and assesses nutrition status of patients, and screens patients for nutritional risk in accordance with established department protocols and hospital standards. Plans and initiates medical nutrition therapy to patients if indicated by patient requirements and clinical protocols.


Responsibilities:

  • Reviews hospital electronic medical record (EMR) daily to plan delivery of nutrition care to patients according to physician’s diagnosis
  • Liaise with patient care team including physicians, nurses and other allied health professionals to ensure effective nutrition delivery and supplementation when needed
  • Screens newly admitted patients to identify those at nutritional risk
  • Ensures validated nutrition care tools are utilized during the nutrition care process
  • Provides medical nutrition therapy, nutrition counseling and education for patients and family
  • Interprets physician diet orders and recommend therapeutic meals according to patient intake data, dietary patterns and patient preferences
  • Evaluates appropriateness of diet order for diagnosis and recommends diet order changes as indicated
  • Instructs patients in diet principles and restrictions per physician diet order and documents pertinent information in the EMR
  • Liaise with foodservice staff to ensure accurate provision of therapeutic meals and nourishment prescription for best patient outcome.
  • Relates relevant dietary information on assigned patients to food production staff and Diet Aide
  • Plans between-meal nourishments for patients as necessary
  • Plans, approves, and implements patient menu revisions in coordination with the Director, Clinical Nutrition Services
  • Maintains adequate inventory of oral nutrition supplements, baby formula and enteral formula
  • Maintains updated and necessary patient education materials, clinical nutrition references/resources, online nutrition platform access and textbooks
  • Collaborates with Food Service Manager to present healthy menu options in cafeteria to staff and hospital guests
  • Participates in the department’s performance improvement initiatives
  • Participates in the development of policies and programs directed toward patient and family education
  • Assists in planning and implementation of National Nutrition Month activities
  • Oversees and directs Dietetic Technicians, Dietary Assistants in patient meal service duties
  • Conducts ongoing in-service nutrition education sessions with the Dietary Department associates
  • Participates in patient care plan meetings, support groups as requested or deemed necessary, and Dietary Department management meetings

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, or an equivalent field; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the essential functions specified.
  • Certification/Licensure by the Bahamas Professions Council as a Licensed Dietitian (LD) or Licensed Nutritionist (LN).
  • Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) or American Nutrition Association Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS) preferred.
  • Intermediate level of proficiency in Microsoft Office software suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Completes nutrition screening within 24 hours of inpatient admission according to clinical nutrition care guidelines, hospital/institutional and accreditation requirements
